Kingston is growing – and with that growth comes exciting opportunities to renew and revitalize our downtown core. This fall, we’ll be discussing a development proposal that will transform the Metro grocery store and parking lot here at the corner of Princess and Barrie St. The new vision for this site includes two residential towers, built on top of a 4-5 story podium, which will add more than 450 new housing units. The new development will be built closer to the street with a new and much larger Metro grocery store on the ground floor. That’s great to see, because as we continue to add more housing, we also want to make sure we see growth in services and amenities for those who will be living in the surrounding neighbourhood.
The proposal also includes several improvements to the surrounding area, including a redesigned delivery zone that would eliminate the need for trucks to back onto Brock Street, easing congestion and improving safety. There’s space planned for an upgraded transit stop, and parking for grocery store customers that will be located in a structured garage above the store. There’s also significant green space planned for the top of the podium, along with trees along the sidewalk on three sides of the property, helping enhance the pedestrian experience and contribute to a greener downtown.
Over the coming months, there will be lots of opportunity for public comments and feedback before Council makes any final decisions on this development proposal. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and am encouraged by the potential for new investments and renewal that can help strengthen Kingston’s beautiful downtown.
