Planning for the Great Lakes Coastal Cleanup Here in Kingston

Kingston’s waterfront is one of our city’s greatest natural treasures – and protecting it requires ongoing care and community action. That’s why, at the end of this month, we are joining several other cities as part of one giant provincial cleanup effort called the Great Lakes Coastal Cleanup.

On Sunday, September 28, we’ll gather as a community at Richardson Beach to launch a large-scale cleanup of our shoreline, removing litter and debris to help restore and preserve this beautiful space. A secondary cleanup effort will also take place at Confederation Park, in front of City Hall.

It’s been exciting to watch this initiative grow, with many local organizations stepping up to lend their support. Among them are the Rotary Clubs of Kingston, Sustainable Kingston, the Great Lakes Museum, Kingston Yacht Club, and Swim Drink Fish. We’re also thrilled to have Neptune & Salacia Diving assisting with underwater cleanup efforts, and Ahoy Rentals generously providing free kayaks for volunteers who want to help clean up on the water.

This event is part of a broader, province-wide effort funded by the Government of Ontario, with similar cleanups taking place in communities like Cobourg, Chatham-Kent, Collingwood, Owen Sound, and Thunder Bay.

The more volunteers we have, the bigger the impact we can make. If you’re able to join us, visit CityofKingston.ca/events to sign up for the Great Lakes Coastal Cleanup. Don’t forget to bring your work gloves, a reusable water bottle, and meet us at Richardson Beach at 9:30 a.m. on September 28.

I hope to see you there!
