A key part our vision as a City is to take vacant or underutilized space, and transform it into community infrastructure that can meet the needs we are seeing in our community. That’s exactly what’s happening here at the Queen Mary Road project, the former Extendicare long-term care home the City purchased in December 2024. When finished, this space will bring three important services together under one shared-care model.
- First, a 35-unit transitional housing program for older adults, operated by Home Base Housing. It will offer 24/7 wraparound support, from case management and life-skills training to meals and healthcare – this portion is expected to open by mid-2026.
- Second, the new Midtown Kingston Health Home, run by Kingston Community Health Centre. This primary-care clinic will serve up to 8,000 people, with occupancy planned for early 2026.
- Third, new community spaces managed by Lionhearts Inc., set to open in early 2027. These spaces will include a commercial kitchen and a social-enterprise laundry that will support vocational training and wellness programs.
City staff and all three partner organizations are working together to ensure these services can operate seamlessly under one roof and bring to life a project that will bring value in so many different ways.
The work on Queen Mary Road marks an important step toward strengthening community health, supporting vulnerable residents, and fostering a more inclusive Kingston. In the coming months, the City will share more about how community members can apply to join the project’s advisory committee, and we’ll post updates on the Get Involved Kingston page. I encourage you to stay connected and take part as we work together to build a space that supports our community where it’s needed most.
