Like in many other cities across Canada, one of the surest signs we are finally moving from winter to spring is the emergence of potholes on city streets. This has been one of the longest, coldest, and snowiest winters we’ve had in many years, and all that snow, ice and rain – combined with repeated freeze-thaw cycles, puts a lot of stress on our roads. Water seeps into small cracks in the asphalt; freezes, expands, and eventually weakens the surface. Before long, those cracks turn into potholes.
To address this problem, the City has now deployed five dedicated pothole repair crews, along with all available equipment. Over the next month, crews will be working both during the day and overnight to fix as many potholes as possible across the city. The first priority will be to fix potholes on the main arterial roads. The goal will be to do as much of this repair work as possible overnight, to minimize traffic disruptions during the day. From there, the City’s Public Works crews will move systematically through residential areas.
And this is where you can help!
If you notice a pothole on your street or anywhere in your neighbourhood, please let us know. You can report it by calling the City’s customer service line or by following the link on this post. Every report helps our crews identify problem areas and make sure they get added to the repair list.
This pothole repair work is also the first step in a much larger effort to improve our roads. The City’s 2026 budget includes a record $75 million investment for road repair and rehabilitation.
This means that streets like here on Elliott Ave and dozens of other roads in poor condition will be completely resurfaced, similar to the improvements made on Brock and Johnson Streets last year. Over the next few years, the goal is to see a significant improvement in the City’s road network, making it easier and more convenient to get around our community.
